- Integrating Solar Energy into Modern Architectural Design

A New Era of Energy-Generating Architecture

China’s push for renewable energy has brought photovoltaics into more modern buildings. Today, BIPV façades do more than let in light — they generate electricity while adding a sustainable touch to design.

★ Glass generates power, and design embodies sustainability. This is the most fitting expression of what these façades stand for.

In partnership with China’s leading photovoltaic glass manufacturers, SunFrame brings these façades from concept to reality, combining clean energy generation with thoughtful design.

Why Choose BIPV Glass?

Clean Energy Generation

BIPV glass converts sunlight into electricity. In this way, it can lower dependence on conventional energy sources and promote sustainable building goals at the same time. When placed in façades, it transforms ordinary surfaces into energy-generating ones.

Customizable Transparency

There are multiple light transmittance options for architects to tailor daylight penetration, balancing natural illumination with occupant comfort and energy efficiency.

Versatile Surface Design

With decorative and semi-transparent patterns, BIPV façades give buildings a distinct touch of personality and style.

Flexible Structural Options

Multiple structural glass systems are available to meet different architectural and performance requirements.

Safety & Durability

Each panel combines laminated tempered glass with photovoltaic films. This construction provides excellent waterproofing and impact resistance. BIPV panels are designed for a reliable lifespan of up to 25 years and come with a 10-year product warranty.

Smart Integration

Designed to work seamlessly with LED systems, the façades can generate electricity and illuminate simultaneously, supporting voltage connections up to 1000–1500 V for commercial and public buildings.

Choosing the Right Photovoltaic Glass

The right choice definitely begins with understanding your project’s needs and each technology’s strengths. Therefore, evaluating how each type performs in different applications is essential to an informed decision.

1. Cadmium Telluride (CdTe) Thin-Film BIPV

  • Adjustable light transmission and UV-value
  • Performs well even under indirect sunlight
  • Excellent waterproofing and safety
  • Cost-efficient
  • Recommended for glass curtain walls and large façades

2. Monocrystalline Silicon (Mono-Si) BIPV

  • Higher power conversion efficiency and stronger current output
  • Ideal for sunrooms, roofs, and canopies directly exposed to sunlight
  • Power generation capacity: 400–1200 W/m²

Note: Low-E coatings can be applied behind the CdTe layer when needed, though they may slightly reduce visible light and power generation.

Application References

Nowadays, BIPV façades and roofs have been successfully applied in a variety of high-profile projects across China, ranging from commercial towers to cultural institutions, underlining the technology’s reliability, adaptability, and design flexibility.
