Philippines Mahi Curtain Wall Project Case Study

Philippines Mahi Curtain Wall Project Case Study

Project Overview

The Mahi project is located in the Philippines. And it is a mixed-use development consisting of a Hotel, Mall, BPO (Business Process Outsourcing office building), and Atrium.

* Attention: Currently Under Construction

☛ The main construction components for the Hotel, Mall, and BPO include: aluminum windows, doors, and curtain wall systems. And these have been fully installed.

☛ The core highlight of the project lies in the design and construction of the curtain wall for the Atrium. This part has a complex structure and needs to strike a balance between beauty and functionality, showing a free and casual design concept.

☛ The project is expected to be fully completed in June 2025.

Atrium Curtain Wall Engineering Details

Let’s learn about this project from the following two parts. First is the structural composition of the curtain wall system. Second is the engineering challenges that we meet in the curtain wall construction process and how we figure them out.

1. Structural Composition

The curtain wall system of the Atrium consists of 4 main elements, with different designs for each floor:

☛ 1st Floor – Hidden Frame Curtain Wall

  • The 12mm thick glass of the hidden frame curtain wall can create a simple and transparent visual effect.
  • The hidden frame design enhances the continuity of the overall facade.

☛ 2nd-3rd Floors–Point-Supported Curtain Wall

This part is a key challenge. We specifically selected ultra-thick laminated glass as the primary material. It not only meets building safety standards but also effectively withstands extreme weather such as typhoons. The most ingenious aspect of the design is the 10mm perforated aluminum panels arranged on the exterior of the glass. The arrangement may seem random, but it is actually the result of precise calculations.

Under sunlight, the panels cast ever-changing light and shadow patterns on the ground. This design perfectly achieves the owner’s desired “free and casual” effect, filling the entire atrium space with an artistic atmosphere.

Roof – Insulation and Waterproofing Design

Insulation boards are used to effectively prevent rainwater infiltration and enhance the building’s thermal performance.

Top Floor – Light Transmission Optimization

A ring of skylights is placed along the edge of the roof to enhance natural lighting and optimize overall transparency.

2. Engineering Challenges and Solutions

(1) Load-Bearing and Wind Pressure Challenges for Point-Supported Curtain Wall

Due to the use of a point-supported curtain wall on the 2nd and 3rd floors, precise calculations of glass thickness, support structure, and wind pressure are critical.

Solution:

Dynamically adjust design parameters based on on-site construction progress and real-time data feedback, optimizing the curtain wall design to ensure structural safety.

(2) Precision of Interface with Mall and BPO

The Atrium is located at the intersection of the Mall and BPO. Any data errors could result in gaps at the joint positions.

Solution:

Pre-reserve the joint positions for the Mall and BPO, prioritize the construction of the Atrium’s central area, and only install the final joints after verifying the accuracy of the data for both sides.

This strategy ensures both construction efficiency and precision in the interface.

3.Current Progress and Expected Outcomes

  • The curtain walls for the Hotel, Mall, and BPO have been fully installed.
  • The Atrium curtain wall is progressing as planned and is expected to be completed by June 2025.
  • Upon completion, the Atrium will showcase a unique light and shadow artistic effect and seamlessly integrate with the Mall and BPO.

Project Summary

The Atrium curtain wall project for the Mahi development demonstrates our expertise in designing complex curtain wall systems, precise construction, and collaborative multi-building coordination. Through dynamic design adjustments, accurate data verification, and the use of innovative materials, we are committed to creating a high-quality curtain wall project that combines artistry, functionality, and safety.
